Rob Lilly builds paintings in layers — sanded, over-painted, and quietly re-entered until the surface holds a record of its own making. His work draws on landscape without describing it, letting weathered color, drawn line, and residual texture stand in for place and time.
The practice moves between gestural intensity and long stretches of restraint. Marks accumulate, retreat, and resolve into deliberate structure; open fields carry as much weight as the incident within them. The resulting paintings feel worked and inevitable — evidence of attention held over time.
Lilly lives and works in the Pacific Northwest, producing paintings, works on paper, and site-responsive commissions from a studio that opens onto the coastal light he returns to again and again.
