Light & Surface
Joey Masciotra makes paintings and works on paper concerned with how a surface holds light. Working in narrow tonal ranges, he lets form emerge slowly — through a quiet division, a shift in weight, a line that arrives only after long looking.
The work is deliberate without being austere. Restraint is the method, not the subject: attention paid to the smallest interval, a decision to leave things nearly untouched, a preference for what is felt over what is stated. The paintings reward the same patience they were built with.
Masciotra works from a studio in the Northeast, producing paintings, drawings, and small editions that share a single, sustained line of inquiry.
